What is Ikebana?

Ikebana ‘arranging flowers’ or ‘making flowers alive’ is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. it is also known as Kado ‘way of flowers’. The tradition dates back to the 7th century when floral offerings were made at alters. Later, they were placed at the tokonoma (alcove of a home). Ikebana reached its first zenith in the 16th century under the influence of Buddhist tea masters and has grown over the centuries with over 1000 schools in Japan and abroad.

Moribana Style Floral Arrangement

Was taught by Kaya Abe Magee, artist and biodynamic farmer of Momo Global Flowers. The class served as an introduction to Ha Zama ‘from the Ichiyo School’ composing with spring blooms such as cherry blossom branches, peonies, ranunculus, and eucalyptus …

After this meditative class students reflected over matcha tea and mochi treats.

A truly poetic afternoon. The space of Maison Bergogne intertwined with Kaya’s soft aura and the sweet floral aromas she brought with her created a sanctuary for our own artistry to bloom and all the senses to become present.
